Oktober 11: Invited Talk at TUHH by Prof. Jong-Gwan Yook, Yonsei University Seoul, on the topic “Wideband Power Isolation and Signal and Power Balancing Topologies in High Speed Serial Interface”. Prof. Yook has published extensively in the fields of signal und power integrity as well as electromagnetic compatibility and is currently serving as a Distingushed Lecturer for the IEEE EMC Society. October 7: Organisation of a workshop on the topic of “Signal Integrity of Digital and Analog Systems” for the European Microwave Week (EuMW) in Nuremberg by Prof. Schuster. Participating speakers: Ivan Ndip (Fraunhofer IZM, Germany), Jong-Gwan Yook (Yonsei University, Korea), Jan Niehof (NXP Research, the Netherlands), Stephan Frei (TU Dortmund, Germany), Stefano Grivet-Talocia (Politecnico di Torino, Italy) und Liang Zhou (Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China). October 2: Institute outing to the city of Cuxhaven. Cuxhaven is located on the shore of the North Sea at the mouth of the Elbe River.

August 30 – September 5: Visit of several EMC Chapters in North America (Boston, Toronto, Ottawa) by Prof. Schuster in his function as Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE EMC Society. Presentations were given on the topic of “Fundamentals of Signal and Power Integrity”. Hosts were: Boris Shusterman and Dr. Antonio Ciccomancini (Boston), Prof. George Eleftheriades and Prof. Piero Triverio (Toronto), Dr. Syed Bokhari and Prof. Ram Achar (Ottawa).

August 20: Invitation of Prof. Schuster to be on the Steering Committee for the newly created EMC embedded conference on Signal Integrity and Power Integrity (SIPI). In 2014, the IEEE EMC Symposium to be held in Raleigh, USA, for the first time will have an embedded SIPI conference. PDF

August 13: Joint summer party of all institutes located in the Harburger Schloßstraße.

July 1: Presentation by Dr. Arya Fallahi, Center for Free-Electron Laser Science (CFEL – Ultrafast Optics and X-Rays Division) of the German Electron Synchrotron (DESY) in Hamburg at the Institute of Electromagnetic Theory on his contributions to computational electromagnetics for metamaterials and particle accelerators. June 18: Talk by Prof. Schuster at the Lothar Collatz Center for Computing in Science of the University of Hamburg on the topic of efficient modeling of interconnects in electronic products as part of the lectrue series “Grenzen verschieben mit Mathematik”. PDF

June 17-21: After the success of 2012 second project week as part of the lecture on fundamentals of electrical engineering with the subject” Electric Power Supply to the Island of Helgoland”. May 24-29: Visit of several EMC Chapters in the Pacific region (Adelaide, Hong Kong, Seoul) by Prof. Schuster in his function as Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE EMC Society. Presentations were given on the topics of “Fundamentals of Signal and Power Integrity” and “Physcis and Modeling of Vias in Printed Circuit Boards”. Hosts were: Prof. Christophe Fumeaux and Dr. Thomas Kaufmann (Adelaide), Prof. Lijun Jiang (Hong Kong), and Profs. Jong-Gwan Yook and Dong Kam (Seoul). May 23: Contribution of Prof. Schuster to the workshop “Power and Signal Integrity Co-Design for High-Speed Circuits (WS7)” on the topic of “Modeling of Power Supply Noise Effects on High Speed Interconnects” during the IEEE Asia-Pacific EMC Symposium (APEMC) in Melbourne, Australia. PDF

April 30: Invited Talk at TUHH of Sam Connor, Senior Technical Staff Member IBM and Distingushed Lecturer of the EMC Society, on the topic “Automated EMC Design Rule Checking: Past, Present, and Future”. Sam Connor has more than 16 years of experience in EMC and signal integrity. He has authored and co-authored numerous publications in the area of computational electromagnetics applied to real-world EMC problems. PDF

March 27: Field trip to the island of Helgoland as final point of the project week during the lecture on fundamentals of electrical engineering of last year. On Helgoland the power station was visited that hosts the submarine cable installation to St. Peter-Ording and where the 30 kV are transformed to 6 kV. The field trip was kindly supported by E.ON Hanse Wärme GmbH.

February 1: Successful defense by Dipl.-Ing. Miroslav Kotzev of his Ph.D. thesis “Probing and Fixturing Techniques for Wideband Multiport Measurements in Digital Packaging”.

January 29: Visit of the Initiative NAT with students from the Gymnasium Ohmoor from Hamburg Niendorf at the Institute of Electromagnetic Theory. After a short introduction to Maxwell’s theory the new insight was applied immediately in the lab. Further Information

January 14: Visit of Prof. Garabed Antranikian, President of TUHH, and staff at the Institute of Electromagnetic Theory. Presentation of current research activities and future plans for developments by Prof. Gronwald and Prof. Schuster.

2012

December 21: Successful defense by Dipl.-Ing. Chrisitan Findeklee of his Ph.D. thesis “Analyse von Sende- und Empfangsantennen der Magnetresonanztomographie mit der Momentenmethode und Volumensegmentierung”.

December 5: Half day workshop on the fundamentals of osscilloscope technology at the Institute of Electromagnetic Theory provided by the company Rohde & Schwarz, Hamburg branch office. Students have the opportunity to extend both theoretical and hands-on knowledge in the field of time domain measurement of high speed signals. PDF

November 14: During the annual meeting of the German IEEE EMC Chpater Prof. Schuster is elected Vice-Chair for the year 2013.

October 11: Presentation on signal and power integrity (SPI) of digital systems by Alexander Vogt, Ph.D. student at the Institute of Electromagnetic Theory, during the ERNI convention 2012. PDF

October 8-12: Visit of several EMC Chapters in Asia (Singapore, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Taipei) by Prof. Schuster in his function as Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE EMC Society. Presentations were given on the topic of “Physcis and Modeling of Vias in Printed Circuit Boards”. Hosts were: Prof. Erping Li (Singapore), Prof. Wenyan Yin (China), and Prof. Tzonglin Wu (Taipei).

September 28: Institute outing to the city of Lübeck. Lübeck was a member of the so called Hanseatic League and is full of beautiful old buildings (like the “Schiffergesellschaft” in the picture).

September 25: Invited Talk at TUHH of Prof. Dr. Wen-Yan Yin, IEEE Fellow and Distingushed Lecturer of the EMC Society, on “Multiphysics Method for High-Power Electromagnetics”. Dr. Yin is a professor at the Zhejiang University (ZJU), Hangzhou, where he is working at the Centre for Optical and Electromagnetic Research, and at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), both China. June 18-22: Project week as part of the lecture on fundamentals of electrical engineering. The subject “Electric Power Supply to the Island of Helgoland” was prepared in collaboration with E.ON Hanse Wärme GmbH on the basis of real design data for a submarine cable installation between St. Peter-Ording and Helgoland in 2009. By means of project based team work students had the opportunity to apply their recently gained knowledge to real world engineering.
